La Discopatía Degenerativa también conocida como Enfermedad Degenerativa Discal (EDD), ocurre en los discos intervertebrales ocasionando un proceso de desgaste en ellos que les hace perder altura e hidratación, esta enfermedad puede estar presente en cualquier área de la columna vertebral (cervical, dorsal y lumbar), causando dolor y limitación para realizar las actividades de la vida diaria.

Los discos intervertebral son unas almohadillas cartilaginosas que se encuentran entre las vértebras y actúan como amortiguador en la columna permitiendo los movimientos que esta realiza, también brindan soporte y protección a las vértebras.

Están compuestos por dos estructuras, la parte central que se denomina núcleo pulposo, y el anillo fibroso, el cual se encarga de proteger al núcleo.

Causas de la Discopatía Degenerativa

Es parte del proceso de envejecimiento, pero existen una serie de causas que pueden acelerarlo  y hacer que una persona relativamente joven presente una degeneración discal avanzada. A continuación se mencionan las causas más comunes;

  • Actividad laboral
  • Realizar actividades repetitivas que requieran del levantamiento de pesos, adoptando malas posturas.

Para diagnosticar este tipo de lesión es necesario iniciar con un examen físico, con especial atención en el cuello, la espalda y las extremidades.

El médico  examinará la espalda para ver la flexibilidad, el rango de movimiento y la presencia de ciertos signos que indiquen que las raíces nerviosas están afectadas por cambios degenerativos en la columna. A menudo, esto incluye revisar la fuerza de los músculos y los reflejos para verificar que todavía funcionan normalmente.

Realizar una radiografía o una resonancia magnética es de gran utilidad para complementar el diagnóstico.
